Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is not a disease in itself but is a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar level, too much body fat around the waist or abnormal cholesterol levels that occur together, elevating the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is becoming common and it can be controlled, largely with changes in lifestyle.

Having metabolic syndrome means you have three or more disorders related to your metabolism, all together, like:

  • Obesity
  • Increased blood pressure
  • High blood sugar level
  • High cholesterol

Since metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors which means that this syndrome can have different causes

  • Insulin resistance: In this condition the insulin doesn't work as well and so the body keeps on making more and more of it to cope with the rising level of glucose which eventually leads to diabetes.
  • Obesity, especially abdominal obesity increases your risk.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle: Eating a diet high in fats and not getting enough physical activity can play a role.
  • Hormonal imbalance.

Aggressive lifestyle changes and sometimes medication can improve all of the metabolic syndrome components.

At least half an hour to an hour of moderate-intensity exercise.

  • Lose weight.
  • Healthy diet.
  • Quit smoking
